Studying Natural and Applied Sciences

Science and technology are driving the "innovation economy" of the future. The Natural and Applied Sciences Department at Bentley (which includes psychology) offers courses that focus on the interests of business students, enabling them to apply knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and recent discoveries to their personal and professional lives.

Portfolio of Skills

Our economy is driven by innovation — new products, new opportunities, new solutions to the challenges of health care, new demands for alternative energies, and new solutions to environmental issues. Professional success requires the ability to factor information about science and technology into informed business decisions.

Many Bentley graduates will find jobs in the high-tech, biopharmaceutical, or health care sectors, or in service industries. Those who can conceptualize the opportunities and challenges of scientific progress will have an advantage in these high-growth business sectors.

The curriculum in the Natural and Applied Sciences Department is focused on three domains where the sciences have a particularly high impact on personal and professional success:

Consumer Product Dynamics focuses on the science underlying consumer products — design, composition, construction, manufacture and marketing. In these courses, students work with common consumer products to develop skills in problem solving using basic scientific methods and modern analytical technologies. These courses build scientific literacy in the core fields of chemistry and physics, and an understanding of applications in food, cosmetics and new technologies.

Earth, Environment, and Global Sustainability focuses on providing students with an understanding of the complex interactions between human society and the physical environment. Courses emphasize the role that local, regional, and global environments play in personal and business decisions. These courses build scientific literacy in the core fields of geology, environmental biology, chemistry, and planetary science, and an understanding of applications in environmental protection, resource and risk management, alternative energy, property development, and environmental mitigation.

Health and Industry focuses on providing students with an understanding of physical and psychological health, and the translation of advances in biology to benefit individuals, businesses and society. Courses focus on issues related to personal health and development, public health, the biopharmaceutical industry and health care practices. These courses build scientific literacy in the core fields of human biology, psychology, genetics and medicine, and an understanding of applications to health and wellness practices, human resources, organization management, health care communications, and the biopharmaceutical and health care industries.
