Women Business Owners and the Covid-19 Pandemic: Digitalization as a Crisis Response

Issued by the CWB and authored by Tatiana Manolova, Professor of Management at Bentley University, Digitalization as a Crisis Response examines how women entrepreneurs around the world responded to the COVID-19 pandemic through the increased use of digital tools and platforms. Drawing on global research and data analysis, the paper explores how digital transformation helped women-owned businesses stay connected to customers, navigate economic disruption, and identify new opportunities for growth. It also highlights the barriers that continue to shape access to digital infrastructure, capital, and entrepreneurial support.

Whether you're an entrepreneur, business leader, policymaker, or researcher, this paper offers insight into how women entrepreneurs adapt during periods of disruption and what is needed to build stronger pathways for long-term growth.

Gearing Up: A Career Catalyst for Women+ is our year-round leadership development experience designed to help early- to mid-career professionals overcome the barriers that often delay leadership advancement. Rooted in the CWB’s CORE Leadership Model, the cohort-based program combines in-person, virtual, and asynchronous learning to help participants build the confidence, resilience, influence, and engagement needed to navigate the “broken rung” and accelerate into leadership roles.

Through in-person, virtual, and asynchronous learning, participants gain practical tools they can immediately apply within their organizations while building a strong network of peers, mentors, and fellow emerging leaders.
