5 Strategies to Dress for Professional Success
What we wear can impact the impression we make and how we project professionalism. But business dress is evolving, blending traditional elements with modern styles. Isa Beltré Soto ’99, MSIAM ’02, senior lecturer in Marketing, sheds light on trends to watch and tips to follow to ensure you’re dressing for business success.
1
Get comfortable:
The line between business formal and casual is blurring. Smart casual attire — a look that combines professionalism with comfort and style — is becoming more accepted in many workplaces, as is “athleisure,” or athletic wear as everyday attire. Tailored joggers, sleek sneakers and casual yet stylish tops all emphasize comfort without sacrificing style.
2
Think sustainably:
There is a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical practices in the fashion industry. Professionals are opting for eco-friendly brands and garments made from sustainable materials. This trend reflects a broader commitment to environmental responsibility and ethical labor practices.
3
Go Bold:
Neutral colors (think black, navy, grey and white) and classic styles and cuts will always be the go-to foundation of a professional look. That being said, bold colors and patterns are increasingly being incorporated into professional wardrobes. Vibrant blouses, patterned ties and statement accessories can add personality and flair to traditional office attire, provided they are not overwhelming.
4
Choose quality over quantity:
Invest in high-quality, versatile pieces rather than filling your wardrobe with numerous less-expensive items. A well-tailored suit, quality dress shoes and a few good shirts or blouses can go a long way in creating a polished look.
5
Consider the fit:
Ill-fitting clothes can not only make you uncomfortable, they can also create a look that’s less than professional. Ensure your ensemble fits well — neither too tight nor too loose —and consider how comfortable you are in it as well, as that can affect your confidence and productivity throughout the day.
