As program director for Bentley’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a long-running program sponsored by the Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center (BSLCE), John Casassa ’17 MST works with students to provide free tax preparation services to qualified residents of Waltham and surrounding communities. Established by the IRS in 1969, VITA is a national initiative designed to meet the needs of low- and limited-income earners, including the elderly, people with disabilities and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.
At Bentley, undergraduate and graduate students in the accounting programs have helped to make an impact in the Waltham community by putting their tax knowledge to good use. Last year, student volunteers prepared nearly 200 tax returns generating more than $250,000 in refunds for members of the local community, all while working with filers remotely. This year, the program returned with both in-person and remote services to help broaden the program's reach.

For the first time in two years, the Office of Sustainability is excited to bring back the Give 'N Go program, a sustainable move-out initiative where students can donate items they don't want to take with them as they return home for the summer. The program was first launched in 2010 by a group of residential students who were concerned about usable goods piled into dumpsters every spring at move out. In past years, Give 'N Go collected 24,460 pounds of reusable goods over five days!
This year, Give 'N Go drop-off locations will be open on May 10, 11, 12 and 14, and the Office of Sustainability could use the help of faculty and staff volunteers. Spots are still open to help Bentley make this impressive sustainability initiative a success! Learn more about Give 'N Go at Bentley.
