A Doubleheader at Fenway
Classes of 2021 and 2020 knock it out of the park

Grads at FenwayOn Saturday, May 1, the Bentley community celebrated the Class of 2021 and Class of 2020 in separate ceremonies at the first college graduation ever held at historic Fenway Park. With just weeks to plan countless logistics and health and safety guidelines, the ceremonies went off without a hitch, as thousands of students and family members filled the park (appropriately distanced and in masks) to celebrate the conclusion of a challenging year.

With the Green Monster serving as a scenic backdrop, Interim President and Chair of the Board of Trustees Paul Condrin welcomed students and their families to the ceremony and remarked on the strength of the graduates as they officially made it to the finish line of a year filled with COVID-19 obstacles and racial reckoning on the local and national levels. "Our Bentley students are special, not only high performing in the classroom, but caring, empathetic and productive members of their communities," noted Interim President Condrin.

Later in the ceremonies, former Bentley President Gloria Cordes Larson delivered the commencement address, where she encouraged graduates to “make the world a better place,” and praised students for their resilience in enduring the worst pandemic in a century that had made them “stronger and more powerful than you will ever imagine.”

Gloria LarsonDuring her remarks, Gloria also emphasized her belief in the younger generation, and noted their potential to change the world was great. “You will go out and make the world a better place,” she said. “You will exemplify the resilience this world needs. You will be the positive business leaders that the world needs to thrive in the years ahead. You will face challenges and overcome them. And you will never forget that you are not alone in this journey. You are traveling this path together. And for that reason, you are stronger and more powerful than you will ever imagine."

During both ceremonies, graduates from each class were chosen to address the crowd and share their Bentley experiences. Courtney Woronka ’21, president of the senior class, and Suchithra Vengalil, a member of the Graduate Student Association were selected to address the Class of 2021, while Jinny Choi ’20 and Melissa Renschler ’12, PhD ’20 addressed the Class of 2020.

Congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 2021 and Class of 2020!

Campus Projects

Campus Construction Projects

As in years past, the Facilities team will be hard at work this summer managing various important projects across campus. For those on campus, some important areas to keep in mind include:

  1. The Library: As the stairs are being repaired, the primary access to the building will be by the existing ADA ramp to the right of the main entrance.
  2. The quad between LaCava, Rauch and Jennison: This area will be shut down for landscape and walkway improvements but access to the buildings will be maintained. See the new building entries in the above link.
  3. Collins Hall: During window replacement and remodeling, expect a road closure in front of Collins Hall that will affect traffic flow. The bookstore will remain open throughout construction.

Speaking of Construction Outside of Rauch...

Did you know that the Rauch administration building wasn't part of campus when Bentley first moved to Waltham in 1968? The building (missing from the photo at the right) was constructed later and opened in 1986. Do you know who the building was named after?

Bentley Commencement Trivia

Last issue, we asked when the first cohort of Bentley students graduated from the institution. In 1920, the 18 students on the left graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. Did you get it correct?

Book Dedications Honor Class of 2021 Library Student Assistants
The Library would like to wish their Class of 2021 student employees a hearty congratulations and a much deserved thank you for helping them navigate this challenging year. It's a Bentley Library tradition to show appreciation to their graduating student assistants with a book or film dedication.

New Faculty Publications 2020-2021
The Library joins the Valente Center for Arts & Sciences in celebrating Bentley faculty who have published books during the 2020-2021 academic year! Check out the print and e-book publications available in their special Faculty Publications collection.

Resource of the Month: Libby for OverDrive
Use the Libby app to search the Library's OverDrive collection, switch between library cards so you can search your other favorite libraries, and find all your books on one digital "shelf." Libby syncs across devices, too. If you've been using the classic OverDrive app, give Libby a try.

New Online Display: Climate Justice
On April 22, the Library celebrated Earth Day by launching a special Climate Justice online display. In collaboration with the Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center and Office of Sustainability, the Library compiled a guide to recommended books, films, databases, organizations and Bentley campus resources to learn how to celebrate the earth every day.

Piecework: Spotlighting Student Creativity

Each year, the Bentley Literary Society presents Piecework, a publication showcasing the creativity of Bentley students. "We hope we can share the creativity and ingenuity of Bentley students," remarked the Literary Society. "Piecework highlights the identities of the authors and the diversity of the students as a whole. This year, we can see many of the authors writing about the struggle with stress of this strange past year."
