Falcon Weekend Scenes

Flying High from Falcon Weekend

This past weekend, over 2,000 alumni and family members of current students visited campus to take part in a successful Falcon Weekend. Over the course of the weekend, campus guests attended a wide range of events from a MOSAIC reception with President Chrite and Breakfast with Flex to the homecoming football game and casual gatherings in Harry’s Pub. On the first opportunity to visit campus since students moved in for the fall semester, parents and families enjoyed a variety of opportunities to see how their students are enjoying all that Bentley's beautiful campus has to offer.

Alumni were excited to be back on campus, and many joined panels to hear what their peers have been up to since graduation. In total, Falcon Weekend featured 30 events over the course of three days in a celebration of the Bentley community. Congratulations to University Advancement and all who made this exciting weekend possible!

Remembering 9/11

Twenty years ago, the world was forever changed in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Tragically, four alumniDavid Carlone ’77, Terry Gazzani ’00, Peter O’Neill ’01 and Amy Toyen ’99were among those who died on that day. Each year, the Bentley community comes together at the memorial tree between the Student Center and Rhodes Hall on Commemoration Day to take a moment to reflect and remember.

This year, the community came together once again to share stories of the four alumni and to remember Toyen's legacy of activism. While at Bentley, Amy was among a group of students who posted 5,000 fliers with the message, “This is our home, bigots not welcome,” in response to hate crimes that had taken place on campus.

The Green Revolving Fund
Investments in reducing Bentley's carbon footprint

Bentley ArenaIn 2018, the Office of Sustainability launched the Green Revolving Fund, a mechanism designed to invest in energy efficient, renewable projects on campus. Seeded with a $250,000 donation from an alumnus and university trustee, the Green Revolving Fund invests in projects on campus that cut operating costs while helping the university better it's carbon footprint. The savings from these projects are then invested back into the fund for future sustainability projects.

This past year, the Green Revolving Fund Committee focused their efforts on projects with short payback periods to maximize the fund’s growth. Initiatives included the installation of carbon dioxide sensors to automatically control ventilation in the Smith Academic Technology Center and LED lighting upgrades in twelve campus residence halls. This project, funded in partnership with Facilities Management, provided students with brighter lighting in common spaces, while maximizing energy efficiency. These upgrades will save 268,920 kilowatt hours of electricity and more than $40,000 annually, some of which will be reinvested in the fund.

Since the fund was launched, it has supported 12 efficiency-centered projects, with no signs of stopping. The Green Revolving Fund Committee, comprised of undergraduate students, faculty, and staff, is in the process of setting their FY22 strategy for increasing the fund’s resources and soliciting project proposals from the Bentley community. The fund ended fiscal year 2021 with a revolving balance over $700,000. As the committee looks to the future, they aim to target larger, student-proposed projects that will have a lasting impact on sustainability at Bentley for years to come.
