Bentley University announced two high school students as winners in the "Break into the Business of Baseball" program, sponsored by Bentley and MLB.com. During summer 2010, each winner will complete a one-month internship with a Major League Baseball team - the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets.

Bentley University solicited 100-word essays from high school students nationwide, asking them to explain why they should be chosen for one-month internships offered by the two Major League Baseball teams. After reviewing hundreds of entries, the winners were chosen by representatives from Bentley and MLB.com.

This year’s winners are:

• Eliana Perlmutter, a sophomore at Gann Academy in Worcester, Mass., will intern with the Boston Red Sox

• John Deming, a junior at Vestal Senior high School in Apalachin, NY, will intern with Mets.com

“We welcome Eliana and John and eagerly await the opportunity to work with them as they get an inside look at the business side of baseball,” says Noah Garden, executive vice president, commerce and sponsorship, MLB.com.
 
Perlmutter says her passion for the Red Sox is not just the about the games, but about what goes into them. “I love following the prospects coming up to the major leagues, and how every change in the roster affects the team as a whole – particularly learning the behind-the-scenes workings of the Red Sox and how business affects day-to-day operations. I hope to learn business skills   that I will use in many aspects of my life -- while having a great time around Fenway.”

Deming mirrors her enthusiasm. “I was ecstatic when I found out that I won this contest, and I'm grateful beyond belief for the opportunity. Learning how baseball operates from a business standpoint brings a whole new angle to the game.”

“The business of baseball is fascinating, and we are delighted to have partnered with MLB.com in this challenge,” says Sandra King, Bentley vice president for marketing, communication and public affairs. “This is a real, hands-on experience for each student; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to experience how a professional sports franchise operates.”
