Fernando de Mello Barreto, Consul-General and former Brazilian Ambassador to Australia, will join the Bentley campus on Thursday, September 27 to discuss the Brazilian economy today -- its structure, characteristics, and remarkable current growth --in Wilder Pavilion, Adamian Building at 2:00 pm.  All faculty, staff, and students are invited. 

Drawing on his experience as chief of staff and economic advisor in the Brazilian Minister’s cabinet and a representative in the World Trade Organization, de Mello Barreto will explain Brazil’s expanding role in international affairs. He will also share his personal insights and views on the specifics of the Brazilian economy including its structure, characteristics, growth, and trends. De Mello Barreto will help the Bentley community understand Brazil’s present position as the sixth largest economy in the world -- focusing on the dynamics of the diplomatic and economic relationship between Brazil and the U.S., especially as Brazil experiences a financial boost in investments and trade.  As a global university focused on cultural commerce and understanding, Bentley welcomes the opportunity for students to learn more about this dynamic country and how that knowledge can translate to business success.

De Mello Barreto has had a distinguished diplomatic career, including serving as Brazil’s Ambassador to Australia, Consul General in London, and representative to the World Trade Organization. In Brazil, he was a member of the Minister’s cabinet, serving in roles such as chief of staff and economic advisor.  De Mello Barreto’s career spans 20 years working around the globe in Ecuador, the United States, Canada, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.  He has authored a number of publications including, The National Treatment of Foreign Investments (1994); Brazilian Diplomatic History from 1912 to 1964 (2001); and Brazilian Diplomatic History from 1964 to 1985 (2006).  He is currently working on the next volume on Brazil’s diplomatic history.

De Mello Barreto received a bachelor of law from the University of São Paulo and a master of law from New York’s Columbia University.
