Honors and Awards: Spring 2020

Bentley recognizes its faculty, staff, and students for their awards, honors and other achievements.

Monica Garfield, professor of Computer Information Systems, and Sandeep Purao, professor of Information and Process Management, received a National Science Foundation grant to explore how data analysis can be used to mitigate long-term homelessness. Working with community partner Pine Street Inn, New England’s largest homeless shelter, the researchers will develop and test analytical models that can provide targeted services to individuals experiencing homelessness.  

Rae D. Anderson Professor of Accountancy Mahendra Gujarathi received the 2020 Outstanding International Accounting Educator from the American Accounting Association (AAA). He received two additional AAA awards — the 2020 Issues in Education Best Paper Award and the 2020 Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Instructional Contribution Award — for his paper “Diamond Foods, Inc.: A Comprehensive Case in Financial Analysis and Valuation.”  

Assistant Professor of French Laure Astourian served as co-moderator of the virtual forum “Black Lives Matter for Armenians.” Panelists addressed a range of themes, including intergroup solidarity, white supremacy, Armenian identity and white privilege as they explored what the Black Lives Matter movement can and should mean for Armenians.  

Monica Garfield, professor of Computer Information Systems, has been elected as Vice President for the Association for Information Systems (AIS).With members from approximately 100 countries, the AIS is the premier professional association for individuals and organizations who lead the research, teaching, practice, and study of information systems worldwide. Garfield will join the AIS Council on September 1, 2020.

A Bentley research team published an article in the journal Energy Research and Social Science, “Worth a thousand words: Presenting wind turbines in virtual reality reveals new opportunities for social acceptance and visualization research.” They found that experiencing wind turbines through an immersive video experience led to reduced concerns about the negative impact offshore wind farms have on the landscape. The team includes Zana Cranmer, assistant professor of Natural and Applied Sciences; Jonathan Ericson, assistant professor of Information Design & Corporate Communication; Erryca Robicheaux, virtual reality UX researcher; Maxim Podolski ’21, economics-finance major.
