Martha (Marty) Howe’s strong interest in the field of forensic accounting has led to innovative teaching and research, including popular undergraduate and graduate courses at Bentley and several published articles relating to fraud and whistleblowing. In recognition of these accomplishments, the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) recently named Howe Educator of the Year for 2013. The award is presented to a full-time accounting educator at a college or university who is distinguished for excellence in classroom teaching; motivating students and educational innovation; has served as a liaison between the classroom and the business world; and is actively involved in professional activities.

Howe created and taught a series of popular courses in forensic accounting, starting with the undergraduate course Fraud Examination. After the success of that course, she developed two graduate courses, and created a Graduate Certificate in Fraud and Forensic Accounting. Incorporating many real-world situations, hands-on cases and guest speakers, the courses encourage students to consider the broader ethical and legal implications they will face in business situations.

As Program Director for Bentley’s masters of accounting (MSA), Howe is the faculty adviser for prospective and current MSA students, many of whom are working on the 150 educational hours mandated for CPA licensing in most states. Says Howe, “My goal is to ensure that students take the appropriate coursework to support their career plans as well as their professional licensing requirements.  It is a pleasure to work with the highly motivated students here at Bentley.”
