The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) awarded Bentley University professor Nathan Carter with the 2010 Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member. Carter, who is an assistant professor of mathematical sciences, is one of only two winners of the national award. He will be honored with $1,000 and a certificate of recognition at the MAA annual summer meeting, MathFest 2010, held August 5-7 in Pittsburgh, PA.

"Coming from a national organization like the MAA, the award confirms that my work is valued not only by Bentley - which encourages and supports worthwhile scholarship -- but also by the broader mathematical community," Carter notes.

The MAA established the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member to honor college or university faculty whose teaching has been extraordinarily successful and whose effectiveness in teaching undergraduate mathematics is shown to have influence beyond their own classrooms. Recipients must have taught full time in a mathematical science in the United States or Canada for between two and seven years since receiving a PhD.
