Bentley University Professor Richard Cleary received the Howard Eves Award from the Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The award was presented on November 17 at the 55th Annual Fall Sectional Meeting held at Providence College in Rhode Island.

"I was delighted to receive the Howard Eves award because it recognizes service, scholarship and teaching," says Cleary, professor and chair of mathematical sciences.  "The previous winners, including Bentley's own Karen Schroeder in 2005, are all people for whom I have great respect and it is an honor to be listed with them."

Award criteria includes both service and presentation components as a teacher and scholar in the field of mathematics. It also reflects Cleary's contributions to the Northeastern Section of MAA. He previously served as section chair, local arrangements chair, and on many section committees. At the national level, Cleary is serving a six-year term as associate treasurer. He is also serving a two-year term as chair of the Joint Data Committee of five mathematical organizations: Mathematical Association of America; American Mathematical Society; American Statistical Association; the Institute of Mathematical Statistics; and Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The committee helps monitor the profession in many aspects, among them employment trends for new PhDs; enrollments in graduate and undergraduate programs; diversity issues; and faculty salaries.  As committee chair, he co-writes several articles with staff members from sponsoring societies, which will appear in top journals such as Notices of the American Mathematical Society.

The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
