Fred D. Ledley, Professor of Natural & Applied Sciences and Management, and Director of the Center for Integration of Science and Industry, was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He will be recognized at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago in February 2014. In naming Dr. Ledley to be an AAAS fellow, he was cited for “distinguished contributions to the integration of molecular genetics and genomics into medicine, industry, and education as a scientist, teacher-scholar, entrepreneur, and executive.”

The AAAS is the world’s largest scientific organization, seeking to advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. Among the goals of AAAS are fostering science and technology education for everyone, increasing public engagement with science and technology, promoting the responsible use of science in public policy, and promoting and defending the integrity of science and its use.

The AAAS defines its fellows as members “whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” AAAS fellows are nominated by three existing fellows and evaluated on the basis of their lifetime accomplishments in science.

“The focus of my scientific work has always been on achieving interdisciplinary perspectives that combine science, medicine, and business,” said Dr. Ledley. “This type of work requires an outstanding team approach.  I have been privileged to work with outstanding colleagues, collaborators, students, and fellows from many different disciplines who made this work possible.”
