1098T Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that Bentley University cannot provide tax advice or assist in calculating individual credit amounts. You should consult a tax professional for assistance in determining your eligibility or for other tax related questions. This document provides basic public information about your 1098T.

  • What is a 1098T?
    • A 1098T reports the amount of payment, up to and toward the amount qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE), and also the scholarships/grants posted to your student accounting during the calendar year. The purpose is to help determine eligibility for the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit educational tax credits. Please refer to the IRS' 1098T document for further information.
  • Who gets a 1098T?
    • Students who are US citizens OR permanent residents, and who receive enrollment credit during the tax year, and had reportable transactions (QTRE) during the calendar year.
  • What's included in box 1?
    • Payments received up to and towards only QTRE charges from all sources during the calendar year. Payment received towards non-QTRE charges are not included.
    • This includes financial aid, loans, checks, wires, or any other source of payment to the account.
    • The amount reported is the total amount of payments received less any reimbursements or refunds during the calendar year.
  • What charged are considered QTRE?
    • QTRE only includes the following as applicable:
      • Tuition
      • Student Activity Fee
      • International Fee
      • First Year/Transfer Fee
  • What is carryover and why is it used?
    • Carryover is a way for us to provide you with the maximum taxable benefit of the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit educational tax credits. When a student ends up with greater charges that payments for the calendar year, we can carry the difference over the next tax year so that you will still have the opportunity to apply the amount toward a possible credit.
  • I graduated in May, why are my Spring payments not included in box 1?
    • Bentley bills for Winter and Spring terms in November or December of the calendar year. Please remember that box 1 is payments up to and towards the QTRE charges for the calendar year. The QTRE charges in this case would be included in the prior year's 1098T form.
  • What's included in box 5?
    • Represents that total amount of scholarships and grants paid in the calendar year. These may include sources such as Bentley University, state, and federal and/or external grants/scholarships.
  • My box 5 is greater than box 1, is this taxable?
    • This may be due to the amount of scholarships/grants that were received in the calendar year is greater than the amount paid for QTRE for the year. Box 1 is limited to the total QTRE charged in the calendar year, and in some cases, the charges for a Spring and/or Winter term may have posted in the prior tax year.
    • We cannot advise on tax liability for any reason. These questions should be addressed by a tax professional.
  • Why is box 9 checked when I'm not a graduate student?
    • Students who are in the advanced standing program, or any student who may elect to take a graduate course as an undergraduate student may have this box checked.
  • Whys are the forms not available on Workday?
    • Once students graduate or leave Bentley, they will eventually lose access to their Workday accounts. We want to make sure that the 1098Ts are available after that time, so that is why we have partnered with Maximus to house the forms on our behalf.
  • Why do you need my SSN in Workday for the form and/or to login to Maximus?
    • Maximus uses your SSN to verify identity and to also help pull your forms when you login.
    • We report your SSN from Workday to Maximus for you.
    • When you register for an account on Maximus, you will be asked to supply either your student ID or last five digits of your SSN.
      • We do NOT report student IDs to Maximus, so this is why we request your SSN.
  • How do I ass my SSN to Workday?
    • Please follow the steps below:
      • In the search bar, type "Change My Government ID" and select the task in the search results below.

      • Enter "Social Security Number (SSN)" in the National ID Type field.
      • Enter your nine digit SSN in the Add/Edit ID field.
      • Please enter the Issued Date if available.
      • Click the Submit Button (bottom of page).
  • I don't have access to Workday, how can I submit my SSN to Bentley?
    • You may fill out a W-9S (available here) mail the form back to Bentley at the address and attention below:

                    Bentley University
                    Attn: Suzanne Burns
                    175 Forest Street
                    Waltham, MA 02452

    • Please do NOT email the completed form as email is not considered a secure form of communication.
  • Why do I only have X number of forms when I should have four?
    • There are many reasons why the number of forms may differ from expectations:
      • If you are an international student, we can only provide 1098Ts for the years that have had an active SSN. If the SSN was not received until part way through your time at Bentley, you will only have the forms for the years that you had the SSN.
      • Students that have graduated in May without any payments for the calendar year will also not have the form.
        • We charge for Spring terms in the previous calendar year, and if the payments were made prior to January 1st, then there would no charges or payments to report.
