Social Security Number
A Social Security Number (SSN) is required to receive compensation for employment and pay taxes in the U.S. International students in F/J status may be eligible to apply for an SSN if employed. (i.e. On-Campus Employment, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and J-1 Academic Training (AT).
For international students, Social Security Numbers (SSN) are used primarily for tax purposes. They do not serve as proof of employment authorization, but they are needed in order for your employer to pay you and so that you can pay taxes.
Some students may already have a SSN from previous on-campus or CPT employment. In this case, you do not need a new SSN for OPT. Your SSN will remain the same for all employment in the U.S.
If you do not already have an SSN, you will able to request a Social Security Number and corresponding card with your OPT application on the Form I-765.
