Graduate Women's Leadership Organization Member Opportunities
May 7, 2021
Bentley University's Graduate Women's Leadership Organization (GWLO) is a group of graduate students who aim to uplift women and work together to achieve their career goals. The organization presents wonderful opportunities to make close connections and network among peers and business professionals. This blog features GWLO president and MBA candidate Estefania Barnuevo to tell us more about the organization and how to get involved.
1. What led you to join GWLO?
When I first arrived at Bentley I was trying to meet people and get involved on campus. I was looking for an organization with purpose and found GWLO. By coincidence I also started working as a student ambassador in the Office of Graduate Admission, and one of my colleagues was involved too so I had the chance to talk to her. She shared with me the various initiatives and events so I was excited to join from there.
2. Has GWLO helped to build relationships with peers?
Yes, we network with students from other schools at events such as the annual Women in Business Conference. We also work with Bentley organizations and staff departments that include Graduate Student Government and Graduate Career Development. It has opened doors and opportunities to meet students and professionals.
3. How did your organization stay connected in the current virtual environment?
It was hard during the pandemic when I wanted to recruit members and we weren't able to connect in-person. We stayed in touch by setting up meetings twice a month and planned for different activities and virtual events. However, the circumstances were not ideal compared to more in-person settings.
4. How do you see GWLO benefiting Bentley student members?
GWLO will make you change your perspective about what makes an organization. It will become a place where you can make friends and be yourself. All graduate student organizations create new opportunities for you to expand your mind and voice. I believe that the best thing you carry after school is the people you meet.
5. How can students get involved with Graduate Student Organizations?
You will need to start asking questions and getting involved. There are websites and active Facebook and Instagram channels. A direct message is the best way to know who is working behind the channel. But what I really recommend is to not do everything at the same time. Set your priorities and time wisely because you also need to enjoy what you are doing. It is not something you just put on your resume.
6. What advice would you give to incoming students interested in joining?
Start now! Tomorrow is too late. If you want something go and get it. If you have the time and the purpose, this could be a great chance to help you navigate grad school with friends and with people who have common interests.
