Bereavement

All staff members are granted leave to cope with a death of an immediate family member or a household member. To allow employees to make necessary arrangements, observe final rites, and take the first steps toward recovery from such a loss, Bentley will grant up to three paid days in the event of the death of a member of an employee’s immediate family.

“Immediate family member” is defined as an employee’s spouse, domestic partner, parent, child, sibling, in-law, grandparent, or grandchild, or corresponding in-law or step relative.  A “household member” is a person having legal residence in or living in the employee’s place of residence.

Employees may also take one day off with pay for the funeral of another family member not listed above. In the event an employee needs additional time off, employees can request the use of vacation or personal time with approval of their supervisor.  Employees must use vacation or personal time to take time off in the event of the death of a non-family member.

Employees must notify their supervisor as soon as they become aware of the need for bereavement leave.

Please remember that the University’s Employee Assistance Program (KGA) is available to assist any employee who is coping with the loss of a loved one.
